Biography:

Scarborough -  Selma Goddard, 96, passed away on January 7th, 2012 at Gosnell Hospice House, after not recovering from a fall two weeks before.

 

She was born on April 27th, 1915 the daughter of Clarence and Annie Goddard, she was the fourth of seven children.

 

Selma grew up on Dingley Island in E. Harpswell and was educated in the local schools. After graduating high school she attended Grays Portland Business College.

 

Her working career began at the Eastland Hotel, then the I.R.S., then finally with WCSH TV for 25+ years as an executive secretary. She retired in the early 1980’s. At her retirement she was given the painting that won the third annual  Portland sidewalk Art Festival that the station had bought and hung in the office. It was her prize possession.

 

As an adult Selma was a resident of Portland, living 30 years on Riggs Street with her two sisters Myrtle, Marjorie, and their mother. In the summers they enjoyed staying at the family home on Dingley Island until it was sold in the mid 1980’s. The last six months she had been living at the Birchwood Assisted Living.

 

She will always be remembered with love by her eight nieces, nephews, and special friends. Selma’s greatest enjoyment was her love for family and their dogs.

 

There will not be a funeral. Donations can be made in her memory to Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland, PO Box 336, Westbrook, ME  04098-0336
