Georgia Anna Powers Doughty

Date of Death: May 8, 2012

Date of Birth: April 24, 1925

Biography:

Portland-Georgia Anna Powers Doughty, Age 87, died on May 8,  2012, at the Baron Center in Portland.

Born on April 24, 1925, she was the only child of Gilbert Henry Powers of Freeport, and Edna Curtis Brigham Powers of Cundy’s Harbor, Maine.

Georgia was a long time member of the Mayflower Society and was a descendent of the Pilgrim William Bradford.   As an animal lover, Georgia was a passionate supporter of Farm Sanctuary, Animal Refuge League and the Humane Society of the United States.  At various times in her life, Georgia was a committed member of the Republican Women’s Club, Woodford’s Women’s Club, and the Westbrook Junior College Alumni Association.  She was a volunteer of the Children’s Museum of Maine, and coordinated neighborhood fundraising events for the March of Dimes.  She belonged to the Woodfords Congregational Church in Portland.

Georgia enjoyed spending time with her friends and extended family.  She loved cookouts, picnics and church suppers.  She especially relished Fourth of July with friends, and Christmas gatherings and summer BBQ’s at Grant's Farm.  As an only child, she often mentioned that she particularly enjoyed the company of her lifelong friends, and gatherings where multiple generations were present.   Picnics with her immediate family near the Osprey nest at SMCC, Bug Light Park and Two Lights were frequent and cherished.

Genealogy and regional history were a passion.  She spent many hours researching family ancestry and reading books on Maine History.

As a young adult she attended Westbrook Junior College (now University of New England).  She was employed at Maxim and Pike Insurance, City Hall in Portland, and Double L Dairy in Yarmouth.  Her most rewarding job was being a stay home mom and wife.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 50 years, Fredrick Henry Doughty of Boothbay Harbor, her son Gilbert Powers Doughty and daughter-in-law Laurie Ann Grant Doughty of Portland, Muffin her beloved cat, and several close extended family members.

There will be a celebration of her life on Saturday, May 12, 2012 at 2:00pm in the Bernstein Room, Baron Center in Portland.

In Lieu of flowers- donations can be made to the Humane Society of the United States in her memory.
