John M. Ackerman

Biography:

DURHAM – John M. Ackerman of Durham died on Saturday, November 29, at CMMC in Lewiston. He was born and educated in St. Albans, New York, attended the New York State Ranger School and finished his Bachelor of Science Degree at the New York State School of Forestry at Syracuse University. He worked for the United States Forest Service for many years in Oregon before returning to Syracuse to study Landscape Architecture and earn his second degree. In 1967 John and his family moved to Maine where he started his own business: Ackerman Landscapes.

As an advocate for the environment, John volunteered to serve on the Durham Conservation Commission and worked to acquire the land that became Durham River Park. He also served on the Board of the Androscoggin Land Trust; open-land preservation was always on his mind and in his heart.

John will be sadly missed by Diane, his wife of 49 years; his son Adam and his wife Anne and their two daughters, Hannah and Marin; his son Seth and his two sons, Brett and Luke; and his daughter Rebekah and her two children, Julia and Ethan.

John's family wishes to thank their extended family and many friends for all their support, the good people of Durham Fire and Rescue, and the caring staff at Central Maine Heart & Vascular Institute.
