David was a kind and generous man with quick, dry wit who could make anyone laugh. David made friends everywhere he went from the summer-complaints to Scotland and England, David was quick with a smile and a laugh.

David was a plumber by trade, but his many artistic talents included wood carving, sketching, and painting everything from breathtaking seascapes to whimsical seagulls wearing fireman’s turnout gear. He built boats of all sizes and freely shared his craft with others who were hoping to emulate his skills.

David was as comfortable on the water as he was on land. Whether he was hauling traps, digging clams, and shooting ducks from an offshore island, or stalking whitetail deer and Moose through the deep woods up north, David mastered his element. David was of the breed of men who built this country, self-reliant, ingenious, and able to master any task he took on.

David had a profound love for his community and spent decades risking his own life as volunteer fireman. He was a loyal friend to the law enforcement community, a friendship that included numerous practical jokes played in both directions.

I looked up to David and frequently sought his counsel on many topics. Sometimes it was just to have a good laugh with an old friend. I loved David like a second father and I miss him greatly.

David was a long-time next door neighbor with whom for a while we shared a dock. We also came to collect some of his paintings and appreciated him both as a good neighbor and friend. We are saddened that we will not again share a laugh or a story with him and send our sympathy to his family.

To the Sparks Family:
My family and I are very saddened to hear of your loss.
It’s impossible to describe David in 500 words or less. David gave me and my family so many memories we could never forget. He was always giving a part of himself to someone else. We are forever grateful for his friendship & the love that he had given us throughout the years. I will personally never forget the Harpswell house; and the warm hospitality that always met us at the door. The lobster boat rides to the crib stone bridge to watch fireworks. Catching lobster; then having lobster dinners. A lifetime of memories from my childhood. David was truly a great man. A man that will be missed but he will never be forgotten.
Love,
John Forestell
