February 20, 2020 | Kathleen M Adams - Evanston, IL -- United States

Dear Marden Family,
I was just rereading a book on _Exhibiting Cultures_ that Parker gave me at the start of my anthropology career when we were both newly arrived at Beloit College. I googled to send him an email hello, and was saddened to see this news. Parker was really inspiring as a dean, and I have fond memories of my days as a beloit faculty member thanks to him. Sending my deepest belated condolences.

Dear Ann and Family,
I was saddened to read about Parker's death in the Beloit Magazine. He had such a positive influence on my learning and growth during my time at Beloit and beyond. I first took his Health, Medicine and Sociology Course and then he arranged and helped me to obtain an internship at a health clinic in Rockford, IL. When I said I didn't have a car to get to the internship, he offered me his, so twice a week I would pick up the keys in Middle College and drive the old station wagon to Rockford. I continued to enjoy a supportive relationship with him while at Beloit where he challenged and broadened my learning and was also in the cheering section at athletic events. I currently work as a mental health counselor and have worked in the hospice field and am continually reminded of the questions and framework about society that he helped me develop. I wish for you solace in the fond memories of him and the legacy of learning he leaves behind.
Take care,
Betsy Phinney

Ann, I was shocked and sadden to hear about Parker's passing. Some of the most rewarding teaching I have done was with with Parker during our Adirondack/Appalachian summer courses. He was a real innovative force for SLU and a good friend. My condolences.

DEAR ANN, I NEVER MET PARKER G. MARDEN BUT HEARD SO MUCH ABOUT HIM AS YOU AND I WORKED TOGETHER AT GUARANTY BANK THAT I ALWAYS FELT AS THOUGH I DID KNOW HIM. HE CERTAINLY HAD A STORIED CAREER AS AN EDUCATOR AND AS AN ADMINISTRATOR. I SANG A SONG TODAY AND THOUGHT OF HIM AS I PRACTICED MY GUITAR PLAYING--A SONG THAT ELVIS PRESLEY HAD SUNG ON HIS ALBUMS OF HYMNS: "PRECIOUS LORD, TAKE MY HAND." (I REMEMBER YOU WERE A BIG ELVIS FAN.) MAY MEMORIES OF BETTER TIMES SUSTAIN YOU IN YOUR GRIEF. I AM SURE PARKER'S SPIRIT LIVES ON IN THE HEARTS OF ALL WHO CARED FOR HIM AS WELL AS IN THE MINDS OF ALL THOSE TOUCHED BY HIS TEACHING AND HIS EDUCATIONAL, ADMINISTRATIVE GUIDANCE. MY CONDOLENCES TO YOU AND TO YOUR FAMILY. MAY HE REST IN PEACE. NEIL CRONIN

Dear Ann and Family --

We are so sorry about Parker's death, and we sympathize with your loss. We respected and admired Parker and were always appreciative of the leadership he gave to Manchester College. He had a strong vision of a liberal arts education, and he kept the college academically strong and moving in the right direction. All of us at Manchester are in his debt.

Parker was a brilliant teacher of 20 year-old college students, but he taught many of us. He certainly taught me. I have thought of him over the years again and again...usually at unexpected times, but always fondly. I wish to express my deepest sympathy to his family and friends, particularly my advisee and conversation partner Kerri.
