I really enjoyed going to the Y pool on the days when Ruth was also swimming. She amazed me by her independence and attitude. She was a friend to all the other early morning swimmers and was missed when she needed to stop attending the Y. I only saw her once after she left, and to see how she manage to adapt to her new circumstances has made an impression on me. I miss her, but I am also very grateful to have gotten to know her. My condolences to her family.

Will miss my dear friend Ruth, who I knew from the YMCA pool. Even in her 90's, Ruth could could reel off poems she learned in school. She astounded me one morning by reciting John Greenleaf Whittier's poignant poem "In School Days" in its entirety. She had more in her repertoire. She was a lot of fun and a favorite with all the regulars at the pool. She enjoyed her trips to the Oxford Casino, and was one of the luckiest people I ever met. One time I saw her sitting in her car at the grocery store and walked over to say hello. She was scratching off a lottery ticket. She won $50! I will miss seeing her at the Lenten suppers at St. Charles Church in Brunswick. Rest in Peace, dear Ruth.

My Grandma, Ruth Lanagan, was truly one of a kind. It sounds cliché but she really lived life to the fullest. She was a Mother of 5 and on top of that she managed to have a career and her own hobbies (swimming, art, cooking, hosting holiday meals, exploring Maine and many more). I feel very lucky to be her granddaughter and got to spend 33 years with her! Nothing can replace a grandchild’s relationship with their grandparent. She always supported me (and everyone she knew) and was so grateful for every card and present I gave her (especially beauty products from my work). I miss her everyday but when I am down I think of how she always kept herself busy and lived an honest life with lots of laughter and humor. The world is more dull and less fun without her here. I love you Grandma and I know you’re watching over us always. Love, Jessie

December 9, 2020 | Connie Kniffin - Brunswick, Maine -- United States

I loved our "Ruthie"! She was the secretary at Coffin school and I was a teacher. We all loved her...she was a mother to us all. She was always able to lift our spirits with one of her silly jokes and you always knew she had your back. I visited Ruth several times at Thornton Hall before the pandemic took hold. Even then she was spunky and full of laughs. She was one in a million and will always be part of my life. She was a sweet heart. Farewell dear friend. Connie

To Ruth’s family:

Ruth was a special person in my life.

Ruth and I worked for the school department at the same time, I at the superintendent’s office and she at Coffin School where she was wonderful as school secretary. Ruth was always supportive and great fun to work with. She was a friend as well as a co-worker.
I am grateful to have known her.

I extend my deepest sympathy to you, her family, for your loss.

Nancy Garland

I met Ruth at the Bath Y a few years back. She was always very friendly and made me feel like I had known her for years. I loved her little giggle when she would tell something funny. I used to run into her from time to time at the grocery store. I have fond memories of a kind lady

December 8, 2020 | Janet Lanagan Sullivan - Stonington, CT -- USA

My mom was full of energy and fun throughout her life. She loved making people laugh and loved to help everyone. She made our family time together memorable with activities like making marshmallow castles for Christmas and going for walks on the beach. She loved going to the casino and shopping with me and my sister Peggy. She loved working at Coffin School in Brunswick and spoke about the children and staff there frequently. During the last few years, she greatly enjoyed the company of Georgia, Dean, Gil and John. We will hold a service next summer to celebrate her life.

December 5, 2020 | Phillip J. Potenziano - Brunswick, Maine -- United States

Ruth shared her kindness and wit with me when, in 1986, I started teaching at Coffin School. I have such fond memories of her!

Ruth took me under her wing, always answering my many questions during my transition and tenure at Coffin.

Wishing the family peace.

Sincerely,

Phil Potenziano, Ed.D
Brunswick School Superintendent

I was a friend of Sue Lanagan's for many years. When we were both in college, I would visit her at her home in Brunswick. Mrs. Lanagan was always nice and friendly; I remember her fondly.

Sue used to reminsce about her childhood days in Virginia and the fun days at the beach with her family.

Mom I love you and I will miss you everyday. I will always remember our Saturdays going out to McDonald’s and then we would go out shopping afterwards and then we would end up buying lottery tickets. Also stopping by to have tea with you. Thank you for making our childhood so much fun especially around the holidays I will always hold on to those memories . Love you Mom
