January 25, 2022 | Andrea Gentry - Geneseo, Illinois -- United States

George knew me as Andrea Bristol, back when I was a wildlife resources student at the University of Idaho in 1999 through 2001. He was a pleasure to have as a professor. I also took care of his house and his dog for a few weeks one summer when him and Joan went on a vacation. I am sorry to hear that he passed and only just now found out when I read the "In Memoriam" section in the U of Idaho College of Natural Resources magazine that I just got.

RIP Dr.LaBar.

I am so sorry to hear of George’s passing. But I also feel fortunate that I had the opportunity to run into him at a talk at the Maine State Museum (pre-COVID) where we had a chance to get caught up and reminisce on what were formative times in both our lives. George was my Ichthyology professor at Orono as well as a formidable squash opponent, and I followed him to Vermont working as his Fisheries Technician at the Water Resources Center....yes, many memorable nights trawling for Cisco on the old Melosira under the unfailing command of Dick Furbush. George was instrumental in fostering and supporting my career in Biology and his knowledge, enthusiasm, and kind heart will always be remembered. Rest In Peace, friend!

Our sympathy to the family of George. Fond memories of school days, Royce being in his class. We enjoyed the visits at the 50th class reunion in Rice Lake. Often think of the LaBar family as we both had Mrs. LaBar as our teacher in high school; and Ted being in Audrey's class. Blessings to the families.

May 16, 2021 | Dr. Jean Richardson - North Ferrisburgh, VT -- United States

George and I served on the Faculty of the School of Natural Resources at UVM, and my husband Carl Reidel ( deceased 2011), also on the Faculty at UVM, officiated at a family wedding. George was a great colleague and friend. His cheerful attitude to life, and his joy of singing will always be remembered.

I first met George at University of Maine when I was a graduate student and he had just returned from Venezuela. When we both left Maine, he went to Vermont and I ended up in Alaska, but we kept in touch by mail and email. Our paths crossed a few times at professional meetings, but we lost touch at some point while he and Joan were still living in Montana. I moved from Alaska to New Hampshire in 2013, and didn't know he and Joan had moved to Maine in 2015. I'm sad we never got together again, but I'm glad our lives touched for many years. I'd like to offer up a poem I found and edited a bit in memory of George:

I celebrate your life
And the measure of its worth
And every single life you touched
While you were on this earth.
I wish to pay my last respects.
That's why I write this here,
To thank you for your friendship
And the memories I hold dear.
It's been a privilege to have known you.
We're family as well as friends,
And I will carry you in spirit
Until we meet up once again.

It was a pleasure to meet George in rehearsals and at concerts of the Oratorio Chorale, and benefit from his spirit and skill. Singing is spiritus--breath--and he lived that fact.

Please accept my deepest condolences Laurie, Pauline, and George.
I have many fond memories of working and recreating with your dad who was always enthusiastic about our activities, be they work or play.
I'm not sure we enjoyed the long nights of trawling and arriving back at the dock when the sky was getting light quite as much as other activities!
Another fond memory I have is of the evening of his interview; we had a light meal out on the original Melosira while anchored. When it was time to return, there was your Dad helping to pull up the anchor! I knew then he was going to be a hands-on colleague.
He was a good teacher, mentor, and productive researcher. I consider my time spent with your Dad as a very special and important time in my career.

Rest in peace, George

Very sorry to hear of George's passing. He was a great influence on me, among many others, as I began my career. I took classes from him at UMaine-Orono and then worked with him for my Master's at UVM. He exemplified commitment, hard work, honesty, and I always appreciated his direct communication. I will always have fond memories of nights spent on Lake Champlain electrofishing for eels or trawling for smelt and cisco.

Best wishes to Pauline, George Jr, and Laureen.

April 22, 2021 | Dr. James R. Hodgson - De Pere, Wisconsin -- USA

George and I were graduate students together at Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana during the late 1960s. We were both working toward our Ph.D.I graduated in 1970.

He was a great colleague, and good friend during those early years. I fondly remember many poker games around my kitchen table in married housing on Fox Street in Bozeman. We also hunted together, and occasionally fished together to supplement our meager food supplies as graduate students.

Ever so often, we crossed paths in later years at international and national scientific conferences, which afforded us the opportunity to catch up on our families.

And we continued to exchange Christmas cards though all these years until Covid in 2020.

Rest In Peace colleague and friend.Your health battle is over.....

Jim

I only met George a few brief times, but I know that Laurie considered him and his wife Joan not only her parents, but also good friends. I hope that she and her siblings find solace in their great memories of lives well and fully lived.
