May 5, 2020 | Guy Nadeau, and Monique - Lewiston, Maine -- United States

Dear Diane

I'm writing on behalf of Dad, Guy Nadeau and myself to let you know how sorry we are for your loss. Dad is living at Clover Manor and is 93 years old. I showed Don's obituary to him and immediately he was saddened. He had very fond memories of Don and wanted me to let you know he was thinking of you. He was the only person that ever called me 'Mon'. He was a dear sweet gentle man. He had a wonderful smile and seemed to be a people person. To you and your family we send you our most sincere condolences.

Don and I shared so much laughter over the years at Bates. My fondest Don memory is of him arriving in the middle of the night to help clean up a bookstore flood—with that ever-present smile. I am so grateful to have known him. Sending sympathy.

Diane and Donna, and others I have not had a chance to meet. In another time, I would be on the way to hug you. As you know, I loved Don, and my partner Quinn remembers how I used to keep a tally of Giants wins versus Bears wins, for years after Don retired, so that when he visited my office we could settle up. I was always excited to see him, and he was such an important part of my work community. I remember telling him when I got my first book contract, and the way he laughed and laughed when my aging grandmother accidentally sent me a ham when she had tried to send me chocolate covered pretzels. It may seem like a silly memory but that picture of him in my doorway is one that will be with me forever, just like the way he glowed when he talked about you. Much love.

My condolences to Don's family. His thoughtful good fellowship was a great gift
to Bates.

March 19, 2020 | Paul Gastonguay - Lewiston, Maine -- USA

Dear Diane and family,
I am so sorry for your loss. I have many fond memories of you both walking the track at Bates and showing up to support at all Bates Sporting events. My friendship with Don began in my first year at Bates in 1985. Don was always so supportive of me and our tennis team. He always called me "Tit-Paul" because when I came to Bates I was 145 lbs soaking wet!! Don always had the biggest smile and made everyone around him feel welcome and loved! Don was a very special member of the Bates community. Keeping you all in prayers.
Love,
Paul

It was a pleasure to work with Don at the Olin Arts Center. Don loved his work and was loved by the people he worked with. You always knew where you stood with Don; he'd tell you exactly what he thought. He was so proud of his daughter, was always asking after everyone else's children--he wanted everyone to be happy and for their kids to have the best life could offer. It was always a pleasant surprise to see him when he visited campus afer he retired or when we'd run into each other out on the town. Don was kind and generous, and I'll miss him.
