November 17, 2014 | G. Wendell Jones - West Hollywood, California -- United States

Dear De Wolfes:
Growing up as a rebellious adolescent in the 60s, I was often alienated from my father's conservative Republican family.

I was badly in need of a male role model I could identify with. Luckily cousin Bill provided that for me (We called him Uncle because he was of my Dad's generation). I deeply admired his work with the ACLU and his questioning of the war.

Bill was larger than life and warm and gregarious and he gave great hugs. I always felt a little better when we were lucky enough to visit with him. He showed me that you could disagree with people and still treat them with love and respect. Thank you Barbara, Rick and Paul for the many fond memories I have of your family.

November 13, 2014 | Susan Scott DeWolfe - Saratoga Springs, New York -- United States

Dear Barbara, Rick, Hillary, Paul, Ellen, Jack, Reid, Abby, and Emily,

I was so sorry and sad to hear about Bill's passing. I hope that much of the light he brought to others has been returning to comfort you now and in the days to come.

I hope to see you all on the 21st, and I will try to round up another DeWolfe relative or two, if I can.

Wishing you all enduring love,

Susie DeWolfe

November 13, 2014 | Doris Norton - San Antonio, Texas -- U.S.

I have such fond memories of Bill's ministry here in San Antonio. It was always evident that he really loved his calling. I remember the lovely service of dedication he did for our four children. Don and I always counted Bill and Barbara as our friends as well. Don passed away in May so my surviving daughters and I send deepest sympathy to Barbara and family at this time of great loss.

November 7, 2014 | Rev. Art Severance - Williamsville, NY -- USA

Bill was a long time friend, having been one of the ministers who served First Unitarian Church in San Antonio many years before I did (1991-2007). His favorite story about San Antonio was when he was called as ACLU president to come bail out Madalyn Murray O'Hair, who had been arrested, and who knew Bill. When she saw him coming, she exclaimed, "Ok thank God you're here, Bill!"
He was lovingly remembered by many, even after 25 years later, and returned frequently to visit and preach. It was always interesting to compare notes...

November 6, 2014 | Marian Swellander - San Antonio, Texas -- U.S.A.

I have wonderful memories of Bill And Barbara while they were in San Antonio. They were sincere friends. I send my condolences to the family and will keep them in my thoughts and prayers in the coming days and weeks.

November 6, 2014 | Bruce & Georjean McKeeman - Prescott, Arizona -- USA

We are deeply saddened at Bill's passing. Georjean remembers meeting him in St. Louis in 1972 and we have been Christmas correspondents for many years. Peace be with you.

November 4, 2014 | Bill Hamilton-Holway - Oakland, CA -- USA

Thank you Bill for a lifetime of support, good advice, and encouragement. You were a minister to ministers, always with a keen eye to what was needed to bring insight and healing. You encouraged my preparation for ministry and I always valued your down to earth suggestions for working to bring the best from ministers and congregations. Your love of life and commitment to family were always an inspiration to me. My love and healing prayers are with Barbara and all your family.
With love and gratitude,
Bill
