My mother was a warm, extraordinarily considerate, heart-centered woman, driven by love, idealism, and the safety and well-being of her family. She was a sweetheart wartime bride to our father, Walter Bigelow Barnard II, and adored him as much as he adored her for more than sixty years until he died in July 2003. Always encouraging us all to keep life in balance, be of service to others, and to pick up litter on the beach, she felt life keenly, cried at the evening news, celebrated beautiful sunrises and sunsets, and gave herself fully to the communities in which she lived. It was a privilege to have had a loving, uncomplicated relationship with both our parents, and we will miss our Mom terribly, just as we miss our Dad.
